Yes, this!! I loved the chemistry build up in Sanditon as well and they just killed him off! The following seasons were unwatchable because I did not believe she was attracted to the new lead who was sub par. If PBS is going to continue to drag out storylines multiple years, then sign them for the duration of a series.
I agree that starting a series that implies a continuing relationship between 2 characters, then changing after a large audience has become invested the series and the; implied relationship, which added a great deal to the series is disturbing and shows a callous attitude toward the audience.
I agree. I even wonder now if she ever loved The Duke or was just using him as he suspected even though there is a genuine respect and a true relationship.I also do not like how she can adapt her behavior so quickly with the new inspector without having providing same respect to The Duke. Not to mention an individual with no family, no support system and coming from a work house during the Victorian era. Talk about having to make ends meet and face prejudice as well.I understand to be filled with dreams and ambitions but the depiction of ambitious women is a bit stereotypical. I also find it an easy writting to have the new inspector having the same family background she had with her father except if it is for her to reflect and distance herself from automatic postures.Maybe it was just not reciprocal after all. And The Duke was right to move on.
Also, I am very surprised that the writers and producers saw the show as more of a mystery serie than a serie combining romance and mystery. From day 1, it has been about a love story during the Victorian era while solving crimes and pushing boundaries.
It makes no sense to have an episode devoted to how Eliza and William first met and then dump the entire relationship and pretend they never intended for them to end up together. Just be honest about whatever happened with the actor instead of gaslighting the viewers.
I suspect women are the main ones that watched this show, due to Stuart being the lead male and Scarlett being a feminist. WE WANT A LOVE STORY!! We wanted them to end up together after FOUR seasons!! For that not to happen was a big disappointment!!
I completely agree with everything being said here, especially the bit about Theo James on Sanditon as well. Not a happy watcher of BBC shows. Especially since I got sucked into paying every month for Masterpiece as a subscription. Ugh. Im canceling that as soon as I finish Vienna Blood.
There is a dearth of quality shows like this one. So I will be watching as much as they can provide because it will be just as good without the Duke plus I think my wife was a little too keen on the Duke!
Given how ignorant people are of actual history and past social mores anymore, having a character like William around to make these points is a necessary device. Without it, it just becomes utterly anachronistic and not worth watching.
Honestly I was pissed at first but now am kind of glad. He never treated Eliza with respect and ended up playing the victim when she chose to have a career and not devote herself to a maybe-could-be relationship. When you love someone you put in the work so the other is happy. Eliza would have made it work with him. He with her? Doubt it.

En mi pas recin estoy viendo el inicio de la 4 ta temporada pero ya saba que a partir de la 5 ta el excelente acor Stuart Martin que daba vida al personaje principal de Duke no iba a estar! Totalmente inaceptable e incomprensible pq esa dupla era puro fuego contenido y creo todos esperbamos el momento en que se dejaran llevar por sus sentimientos! Eso hubiera sido un justo y perfecto final de la serie! Un desastre!
I agree with all comments. One reason I enjoy Masterpiece series is the way characters are developed. I hate that the vicars keep changing in Grantchester. The seasons are so short on most of the series so characters are very important if you want to keep an audience. It appears they are not interested in our loyalty.
It would have been great if they had Scarlett and the Duke marry for at least one romantic night. After that, the Duke could have received the offer to transfer to the States leaving Scarlett behind. Then they would have been able to end the marriage/relationship at a later date. It would have left the fans happier moving into the next season. Timing is important! Disappointed too!
I will watch Season 5, however I am highly disappointed and believe the decision makers will come to rue their insulting-to-the-viewers show change. Apparently they failed to realize we were given, via the title, an expectation which they then destroyed!
Shame in PBS series, Miss Scarlet and Duke, for not following through producing this popular series I paid extra to watch in anticipation of William and Eliza finally figuring out how to marry/share/acknowledge the love they have always hadfor each other! I looked foRward to the series evolving into the confirmed love/living together and solving crimes together, or Eliza over Duke and his love for her allowing him to acknowledge this with her.
Thank goodness ppl that feel the same as myself!!!!???Loved this show and all the characters. But I too feel let down and sad abt the numerous changes.Especially The Duke leaving. Did he want a raise $$$ was that the issue. They should have pd him every penny he wanted if this is the fact.How can you break up a team that worked like clock work???Only to be replaced by a guy with no chemistry with the main character, Miss Scarlet. mind boggling !!! The main reason I watched the show was the duke! He is handsome and sexy. Scarlet could at times be too overbearing. Would have preferred more emphasis on the characters rather than the weekly mystery..Had hopes for their relationship, working together. Well, that is no more, am done with the show. Stunned how the writers could drastically change the tenor of the show and expect people to watch!
For a woman who loved her father and seemed teachable and curious throughout most of her life; Scarlet certainly turned extremely self-centered and nearly narcissistic in her refusal to apologize for hurting the duke or even grateful for the love he offered her. Most people will admit that love is the greatest gift we can offer and receive in this life. Love given in sacrifice and received in gratitude is the storyline of tears and cheers. But, Scarlet refuses a man who gets her, who respects her, who admires her, who would give his life to protect her, and accommodate his work to include, support, and honor her. I say she gets what she gets. How many men like does she think she will find in the 19th century? How many would she find in this one?
I found out about this show when I stopped watching Bridgerton S3. Someone had recommended other shows and this was one of them. I LOVE this series. When I found out the Duke was gone, I almost cried. I also read that Moses was gone also, which I hate.
I admit that I was upset that the Duke was so abruptly eliminated and started watching season 5 with a mindset to be disappointed. But by the 4th episode, I was intrigued and by the final episode, I am looking forward to the next season. The relationship with Eliza and the Duke was boring me. I look forward to seeing what happens next.
I see a lot of finger pointing at PBS. But you know of course that PBS does not make the show. They do not make ANY production decisions for script writing, casting, etc. They buy British productions for Masterpiece and other series. This is co-produced by A+E International and Element 8 Entertainment and made in the UK. It is aired in the UK first and then purchased by other countries to air.
Noooooo! I am just tuning in for the much anticipated new season only to find the Duke is missing from Miss Scarlet AND THE DUKE. No. No. No!! I hope that whatever the actor went on to is worth the tears and huge disappointment of this fan. Plenty of series have led us through similar romances from Moonlighting to Bones but with the happy ending we want. Fleeing to America was also how romance was squelched in Silent Witness. What is wrong with the BBC?? If there is no supper for tears, I will just go to bed hungry. ???
I liked her dynamic with Nash too. In the long run, he showed her more respect than the Duke ever did. And although he was also strong-willed, he was considerably less stubborn than the Duke was too. The scene where they talk about which cane he should choose was one of my favorites of the whole series.

Since I’ve got the Canon 24-70mm 2.8L for the first time in my hands I can definitely say that this was not love at the first sign. This did not changed in the past two years. It is what it is. A rock solid work horse. Very good build quality but average image quality. So when Canon announced the successor of this lens I was quite amazed. After reading through a couple of reviews I was sure I have to get one. And I did. You know, Christmas time is a very good excuse for getting new gear.
So the parcel arrived at my doorsteps and I unboxed it. Nothing unexpected in the box? Far wrong! The usual leather pouch for the lens was really no surprise. But when I garbed the lens hood I was wondering how long this one will last. If you never had the old 24-70mm in your hands that might not be a surprise or anything to wonder about. But I did and this tiny wobbling lens hood thing feels kind of strange. After using it now for several days I’m getting used to it. Especially the lock button is very nice. I can’t count the times where the old lens hood was part of my images because it missed this lock button. But still it is a very tiny lens hood which covers only the wide angel focal length and does not provide a nice rain cover like the old one.
Another thing I found in the box what a lens. If I had not spend my time on reading reviews about it I would thought they boxed the wrong one. While the old 24-70 is a rock solid metal made lens the Mark II is plastic land. I don’t say it feels cheap but I’m a little bit afraid that it’ll not be as durable as the old version. But I’ll see. Another thing I noticed was the smooth focus ring. But once I tried to zoom in and out the zoom ring does not move that smooth. It is very tight and it is not easy to move it to the right position. Because of this I’ve ordered a second lens but I encountered the same thing. Maybe this will change while using the lens.
So far I did not said a good word about the Canon 24-70mm L Mark II, right? Let’s stop this. Because once you finished unboxing a lens you can attach it to a camera. I did it and that’s where the magic begins. The lens is amazingly sharp. That’s real Lens Porn. Even with the widest aperture it captures details the old one was never capable of. The are a ton of reviews and high tech tests out there but you need to see this yourself. I’ve got this lens for a couple of weeks now and I have to admit that I love it. It is on par with the Canon 70-200 2.8 IS Mark II. It does not longer matter which lens you have attached as long as it is the right focal length.
I used the Sigma 18-35/F1.8 on the Pentax K-70, the color and rendering is very good, matching Pentax prime lens in sharpness and beating them in fullness of color output, I had no focusing issues luckily, for the money it is an absolute bargain
Surprised not to see the canon 24 and 17tse lenses here, I thought you had used them in your coverage of the 5dsr, perhaps they are not exceptional in your view? However the 17 especially is practically unrivalled almost in its class of its own.
I had been hoping that Olympus would upgrade the 75/1.8 to PRO status, making it dust-proof, splash-proof, and freeze-proof. The lack of weather resistance is what has made me reluctant to purchase what seems like an otherwise exceptional lens. I was caught in a few sudden downpours where my camera and attached lens were heavily soaked, and I doubt I would have had any peace of mind if my equipment were not weather-resistant. Although shooting in fair weather is fine, adverse conditions almost always come with such interesting light that you feel inspired to bring out your best optics.

Severe front/back focus (more on canon mount before firmware upgrade) Somewhat correctible by dock but also reported to cause more problems on the distances beyond the distance you use when calibrating.2. Simply failing to find focus and gives up.3. Severe front/back focus when using outer focus points. Even more of a problem on D500. Sigma seems unable to fix this as reported by the people who has sent in their lens to Sigma.
I made three attempts to find a decent Coolpix A and eventually just gave up. I think the copy you got for your A/B comparison with the GR was a fluke golden sample! I already owned a GR so I could compare easily enough and the Nikons were all a bit of disaster.
I do use Nikon gear for specific shoots (where I need reach, speed, or flashes) but the lenses are not in the same league as the Leica lenses. (They are also significantly cheaper.) I also use Sony A7rII with Batis lenses when I need more megapixels or want eye focus. The system is also as portable as the Leica system. But I enjoy shooting the SL with native and M lenses the most.
These days, the manufacturers have cottoned on to the fact that the only people using cameras are pros or well-heeled enthusiasts so lens performance standards have risen, as has the size of the lenses. The X1D is just the latest manifestation of that trend. (It will be interesting to see whether it is you or Lloyd that is the first to uncover a hidden fatal flaw or frailty in it :-). I thought that he was particularly unlucky with his gear until I read some of your lists.)
Well there are always trade-offs. The massive new Sony 50mm f1.4 has slightly better resolution than the older compact 55mm f1.8, but it transmits less light presumably because of the extra glass. Newer lenses also have better resolution, but the depth of focus is narrower (which can be a good thing). AF and OIS seem to add considerably to bulk: look at the new SL 50mm f1.4, which is Otus-like, despite the fact that it relies on software correction. In the end, I have opted for the compactness and versatility of M glass for fast lenses, combined with Batis lenses for things that need AF. The SL zooms leave me wanting for nothing in sharpness when there is adequate light as a lighter alternative to carrying several primes.
I have not noticed any focus shift on my 24-90mm; my pics seem critically sharp. I resisted getting the 24-90mm because I thought that it would be like my Nikon equivalent (which is vg, but surpassed by the primes) but I found it to be at least as good as the M primes. Having a humongous 90-280mm has also been surprisingly useful. The Nikon 70-300mm is much lighter and pretty good from 70-200mm at medium apertures, but not in the same league as the Leica (which should be the case, given the price and size difference).
Ming, that is some defects list! Never heard of detaching aperture blades in an (undamaged or abused) lens before. My old film Leica lenses are still going strong and apart from a stiff focusing 24mm R lens (lack of use) they all still have silky smooth focus, and this includes my 65 year old f1.5/50 Summarit.
I just check my local official provider and checking the availability of X1d, 30mm and 90mm. At first, I want to buy the limited edition, but I want to skip the 45mm. So, I placed my order for the silver and 30mm first.
Ricoh GW3 21mm conversion lens is really good at 5.6 and has three advantages at this focal lens. Vibration free shutter, daylight sync up to 1/4000sec and no need to expose the sensor while changing focal length.
