Overall, Adobe’s long been criticized for its expensive, sometimes-slowly-and-with-sales-hanges application suites. More good news is that the new version of Photoshop is now priced effectively. There are no hidden costs at all. Either on top of your existing price for the software itself, or a new one for the same price as Lightroom, or for an even lower price. One might think, given Apple’s past history in forcing down prices of their software suites, Adobe hasn’t managed to undercut itself in price like it did with Lightroom; however, that’s unfortunately not the case. Too bad Apple’s pricing strategy seems to offer more of a complex, tools-heap strategy (especially with regards to a number of photo-editing programs, compared to Lightroom).

The Tool Presets panel is where the main tool presets are kept. Each of the tool presets corresponds to a tool that the Expert tool preset system is designed for. Dressed in a suit of features rather than a plugin, Photo RAW 5 is still a great albeit slightly more finicky opening than the regular Adobe Camera RAW program. Its large size (772 MB) plus its extremely complex interface strike me as a bit daunting for new adopters. You’ll have to be a bit patient, so just give it a few weeks or months to get used to its layout.

For instance, in this example I have selected Layer 2. To get a greater understanding of how the Gradient tool works, click within the Gradient tool’s Fill tool and make a selection. Then, click the Gradient tool again and, without moving it, click an area of the image you wish to shade. You can now add the colors of your choice to the gradient and define it. Besides working primarily on film photography, I have only dabbled with Lightroom a little bit. Now that I have Share for Review, I feel that opening and importing an image can do double duty as a “Film Rush Job.” I have a hard time imagining an import job taking longer than 10 minutes – that includes all Lightroom modules and other way to get RAWs into Lightroom. I was surprised how quickly I was able to open a file with Share for Review with no problem. I think it would be a lot of fun to keep a “rush job log” of all the times you used Share for Review. I know you are out there. 🙂

As you can see, Lightroom 4 has all the elements that you expect out of the product. Lightroom 3 was a very nice product and is easily the best of the bunch. However, as usual, the software is lacking when compared to desktop applications. I would say that Lightroom is still on the middle tier of products when it comes to user friendliness and discoverability. Many of the features that Lightroom offers are terrific, but they are buried beneath the surface of the UI and many workflow items. There’s nothing quite as tedious as creating a catalog, for example, when you know that you would rather just have that information as an extra tab in your bag. That said, there are a lot of heartwarming and generous enhancements to today’s release. Color has never looked better and the overall performance of Lightroom could not be better.
