The present invention relates to a method for adjusting the thickness of a multi-layered ceramic sheet for a piezoelectric device such as an ink jet head and a method for manufacturing a piezoelectric device such as an ink jet head using the ceramic sheet.
2. Description of the Related Art
FIGS. 1 and 2 are schematic sectional views showing steps of a conventional ceramic sheet for an ink jet head.
As shown in FIG. 1, the conventional ceramic sheet for an ink jet head includes an undercoat layer 1 that is an insulating layer, a piezoelectric element 2 that has a piezoelectric material such as PZT (lead zirconate titanate) and a sacrifice layer 3 that is removed after the piezoelectric element 2 is formed. The thickness of the undercoat layer 1 is constant.
As shown in FIG. 2, the piezoelectric element 2 has a thickness that varies in the direction of its width (dimension in the XY plane). That is, the thickness of the piezoelectric element 2 varies in the direction of its width, corresponding to its driving amount.
When such a ceramic sheet is used as a piezoelectric element for an ink jet head, the characteristics of the piezoelectric element 2 vary along the direction of its width, resulting in a variation in the amount of ink drop ejected. Hence, a desired drop ejection amount cannot be achieved. Accordingly, the ceramic sheet is manufactured such that the piezoelectric element 2 is formed in a uniform thickness, and then, the sacrifice layer 3 is removed to form a piezoelectric element of a desired thickness. The piezoelectric element 2 may be formed in the same thickness as a thickest portion of a ceramic sheet for an ink jet head, which is used for a position to eject a large amount of ink, thereby preventing the variations in the amount of ink drop ejected from the piezoelectric element 2 in the direction of its width.
